FF7 Remake Revisit (They didn't update the buttons...)

(If I were a YouTuber, the thumbnail would've been like "STILL GOOD?")

Back in 2020 I wrote about FF7 Remake when I had played through it for the first time. It's kind of fun to go back and read, because boy, I was a huge FF7 newbie. I didn't even realize until now that I had not played through the original until after I played Remake. I've been thinking I was a huge FF7 expert before Remake came out, but no, that was not the case at all. It was after Remake I really got into FF7, and I suppose that is a testament to how good it was... and is!

With the news that the third and final part releasing will be simultaneously on PC as on Playstation, I started replaying FF7R earlier this year (back in June.)
With Rebirth you got some kind of bonus if you had a save file for the original if I recall, so I figure something similar will happen here, so my ambition is to also play through Rebirth again before then.

I wasn't planning on getting all achievements, because I did that back on PS4 (so I would also automatically get it on PS5 when the upgrade was released) and I remember pain. But fortunately they've added cheats, or as they so elegantly call it: Streamlined Progression, so it is quite trivial to get all the achievements, as long as you can bother going through the collapsed expressway with Aerith way too many times, and do those stupid crane puzzles every time.

...Yeah, playing this game, again, and going for all the achievements, again, it is very tiresome some of the stuff in it. There are so many scripted moments you have to walk slowly or just wait around. It was annoying the first time, but it is extra annoying the second time. So streamlined progression makes it a little more tolerable.

Anyway, I still like this game other than that.

I still love all the characters. I still get a warm fuzzy feeling seeing Aerith and Cloud trying to work together. I still get a tear in my eye hearing Elmyras backstory and seeing Jessie die. I still love the dancing minigame and seeing Cloud come out in a dress. There are so many good times in this game.

But let's talk about the real elephant in the room, and the biggest reason I wanted to make this post...

They didn't update the colors of the buttons in the dance game

The game was originally a PS4 exclusive, and stylized quite heavy around that.

So when they did the dance minigame they styled the buttons around the PS4 controller. For example, the square button:

Makes sense if you look at a PS1/2/3/4 controller:

So back when the ports were announced I was really curious how they were gonna handle this. I assumed it wouldn't be too much effort to just update the color (and the button symbol) and they would do that... but they didn't!

Let's refresh our mind with what colors the Xbox controller has:

So now, here's that same sequence from my playthrough when I was playing on PC (with a Steam Controller 2, which is practically a Xbox controller as far as the game is concerned):

X should be blue, but it's pink because Playstation

It's the West button, aka X. But it still has the color of the Playstation Square button. Confusing huh? And it's the same for the others!

Y should be yellow, but it's green because Playstation
A should be green, but it's blue because Playstation

The only button that ends up working out is the East one, aka B, because that button is red(ish) on both Xbox and Playstation:

Anyway, that's what really grinds my gears.
